Reggaeton’s roots trace back to Panama and Puerto Rico, where Jamaican dancehall, reggae, hip-hop, and Latin rhythms blended into something new.

  • In the 1970s and 80s, Jamaican workers in Panama brought reggae en español, with artists like El General pioneering the sound.
  • By the 1990s, Puerto Rican DJs and artists like DJ Playero, DJ Nelson, and Vico C mixed these influences with hip-hop and dembow rhythms, shaping reggaeton’s signature beat.
  • Underground “Reggaetón” (first called “underground”) was raw and rebellious, spreading through mix tapes and clubs.
